Chapter 5 - what Margaret found in the bag

Margaret told us the full story that night at the house, after the doctors had released me and Ethan had made sure every gate, camera, and exterior door had been checked. We sat in the small family den instead of the formal living room. I was wrapped in a blanket, my bruised leg propped on an ottoman, while Ethan sat beside me, so tense I could practically feel it coming off his body.

Margaret placed a sealed evidence pouch on the coffee table.

Inside was a cheap burner phone.

She had found it in Chloe’s bag that morning while looking for a missing set of estate keys. What made her open the bag at all, she admitted, was instinct. What made her call North Shore Response before lunch was what she saw on the phone after Chloe left it unlocked.

There were messages—some sent, some drafted, some deleted badly enough to be recovered once the sheriff took over. Several were to a friend of Chloe’s in Miami, bragging that Ethan “still watches” her and that once the baby came, I would be “too weak and too busy to keep him.” That alone would have been embarrassing and delusional. But there was more.

One draft message stopped Ethan cold.

If Olivia loses this baby, maybe he’ll finally understand she was never right for him.

I saw Ethan’s whole face change when he read that line. Not just anger. Something worse. The kind of disbelief that comes when a person you dismissed as messy suddenly reveals herself as dangerous.

There were also searches on the phone about disabling residential cameras, private gate access, and whether a spouse’s separate property remained separate after marriage. That last part didn’t mean Chloe had some legal master plan. It meant she was sniffing around the edges of our finances with just enough ignorance to be reckless.

Margaret told us she had confronted Chloe late that morning and told her to leave the estate by sundown. She also slipped an emergency flare launcher into her pocket before going out to bring me lunch in the garden, because after reading those messages, she no longer believed Chloe would leave quietly.

“She was hunting for leverage,” Margaret said. “And when she realized she’d been caught, she did what people like that always do. She escalated.”

For the first time all day, Ethan said nothing at all.

He just stared at the evidence pouch like it had cracked something open in him.
