Chapter 12 - Vanessa Left Ethan Before I Decided What to Do About Either of Them

Vanessa called me six weeks later.
I almost declined.
Then answered.
Her voice sounded different.
Less polished.
“I’m leaving Ethan.”
I said nothing.
She continued.
“Not because of you.”
“Good.”
“I need you to know that.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I waited.
“For kicking the papers at you.”
“For saying what I said.”
“For standing there after he pushed you.”
That was specific.
Better.
Then she said:
“I didn’t know he was going to touch you.”
“I believe you.”
“I still wanted you cornered.”
There.
Important.
She had believed pressure was:
justified.
Why?
Harbor House.
Their house.
Her studio receivable.
Their personal guarantees.
Vanessa had invested:
savings,
reputation,
years
into Ethan’s projects.
She feared financial collapse.
She also believed:
Whitmore money had always been the safety net.
When I refused, she experienced:
the disappearance of a promise.
Still not permission.
But a real motive.
Vanessa later cooperated in producing:
texts,
drafts,
financial projections.
Not out of sainthood.
She needed:
her own attorney,
her own protection.
Good.
