Vanessa was not a cartoon gold digger.
I liked her when Ethan introduced us.
She ran an interior-design studio.
Worked constantly.

income,
opinions.
She and Ethan met on a hotel project.
Her design firm was hired.

for three months
and got married eighteen months later.
At first Vanessa avoided family money conversations.

The trust financed one property Ethan later redeveloped.

some legal costs.

became difficult to see.
Vanessa began saying:
“Your family capital.”

“our family capital.”
I noticed.

nothing.
Why?
Because she was married to:
my son.
And because I had used the same language.

“All of this is for you two eventually.”
