Chapter 1 - THE HATCH

The afternoon sun made the Harrison backyard look harmless.
The pool water glittered beside the patio. Burgers sizzled on the grill. Plastic cups sweated on the outdoor table. Someone had left a radio playing softly near the sliding glass doors.
Daniel Reeves stood near the grill with a pair of tongs in one hand.
His eleven-year-old daughter, Emily, knelt beside the pool equipment hatch, trying to retrieve a toy Mason had dropped near the edge.
Tyler watched her.
He was fifteen, tall for his age, confident in the way boys become when adults have excused them too many times.
Emily lifted the metal hatch halfway.
Tyler stepped forward.
Then deliberately slammed it down on her hand.
The sound was sharp.
Emily screamed and collapsed beside the pool.
“Dad... it hurts!”
Daniel dropped the tongs.
He reached her in two strides and lifted the hatch away.
Emily’s fingers were crushed beneath the edge. Her face had gone white.
Michael Stanton, Daniel’s older brother-in-law, came out from under the patio umbrella holding a printed sheet.
He did not check Emily.
He pressed the paper into Daniel’s chest.
“Sign it. She caused it.”
Daniel looked at him.
“What?”
“Incident statement. Says she opened the hatch without permission.”
Emily sobbed against Daniel’s side.
Tyler stood behind Michael with no remorse on his face.
Daniel scanned the page.
The form had already been completed.
It claimed Emily ignored warnings, mishandled pool equipment, and injured herself.
At the bottom was a signature line for Daniel.
He crumpled the paper.
Then dropped it onto the wet concrete.
Michael stepped into his face.
“You are not turning this into a family scandal.”
Daniel’s expression became still.
“Touch my daughter again.”
Michael grabbed Daniel’s shoulder.
Daniel hit him once.
A single hard punch.
Michael fell backward onto the wet concrete beside the pool.
The backyard erupted.
Sarah screamed.
Tyler stepped away.
Two relatives rushed toward Michael.
No one moved toward Emily.
Sarah ran to Tyler first.
“Are you okay?”
Daniel stared at her.
Tyler had just crushed Emily’s hand.
Yet Sarah was checking him.
The sound of ambulance sirens grew louder beyond the houses.
Daniel gently lifted Emily.
Her injured hand trembled against his shirt.
“It hurts,” she whispered.
“I know. I’ve got you.”
As Daniel carried her toward the gate, eight-year-old Mason ran from behind the patio chairs.
He was shaking.
He held Tyler’s phone in both hands.
“You need to see this.”
Daniel stopped.
The screen was locked.
Mason whispered the passcode.
Daniel entered it.
A video began playing.
Tyler’s face instantly changed.
His smugness disappeared.
“Wait... don’t!”
Daniel looked at the screen.
Then at Tyler.
The video showed the pool area.
Not today.
Another day.
Another child.
May you like
Another scream.
And Michael’s voice telling Tyler exactly what to do.
