Chapter 7 - TYLER’S CONFESSION
Tyler asked to speak with Emily before entering a plea.
Emily refused.
Then changed her mind.
The meeting occurred in a courthouse conference room with attorneys and therapists present.
Tyler sat across from her.
He looked different without the smirk.
Smaller.
Ashamed.
Emily’s injured hand rested inside a protective brace.
Tyler looked at it and immediately looked away.
Emily spoke first.
“Why did you do it?”
“Uncle Michael told me to.”
“That’s not why.”
Tyler swallowed.
“He said Dad treated you like you mattered more.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Did you hate me?”
“Sometimes.”
Emily’s eyes filled, but she kept her voice steady.
“Because Dad protected me?”
“Because nobody protected me like that.”
Daniel sat behind Emily.
The words struck him too.
Tyler continued.
“Uncle Michael said if Daniel lost control, Mom would get custody. He said we would all live together and things would be normal.”
“You thought hurting me would make things normal?”
“I thought the hatch would only scare you.”
“You slammed it.”
“I know.”
“You watched me cry.”
“I know.”
“You let Uncle Michael blame me.”
“I know.”
Emily’s voice hardened.
“Stop saying that.”
Tyler looked up.
“I don’t know what else to say.”
“Say what you chose.”
Tyler breathed in.
“I chose to hurt you.”
The room became silent.
“I chose to listen to him because I liked feeling powerful. I chose to laugh when you were scared. I chose not to stop when I knew it was wrong.”
Emily nodded.
That was the first honest apology she had heard.
Not because it asked for forgiveness.
Because it named the act.
Tyler pleaded guilty.
He agreed to testify against Michael and Sarah.
The juvenile judge ordered secure placement, long-term treatment, restitution, and strict no-contact conditions unless Emily requested otherwise.
Tyler’s cooperation reduced the sentence.
It did not erase it.
Before leaving the room, he looked at Mason.
“You did the right thing.”
