Chapter 11 - My Mother Left Frank Without Me Ordering Her To

After rehabilitation, Elaine did not return:

home.

That surprised Frank.

And me.

She moved temporarily into:

a furnished senior apartment near my aunt.

Not because I arranged:

everything.

I offered.

She said:

“No.”

Good.

Her attorney updated:

medical power of attorney,

financial authority,

beneficiary instructions where appropriate.

Not to punish:

Frank.

To reflect:

her choices.

She also filed for:

legal separation

before later deciding on:

divorce.

I asked once:

“Are you sure?”

Elaine looked at me.

“Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Ask if I’m sure because you’re afraid I’ll blame you later.”

She knew me too well.

I smiled slightly.

“Fair.”

Then:

“What do you want from me?”

“Help me understand documents.”

“Drive me when I ask.”

“And don’t call anybody on my behalf unless I say.”

That was autonomy.

Real autonomy.

Not:

leave her alone.

Not:

take over.

Support with:

edges.

May you like

I was learning.
