Chapter 5 - Frank’s Career Had Stalled Long Before Mine Passed Him

Frank made lieutenant at forty-three.
Big deal.
My mother threw a party.
He talked about:
captain
within two years.
Then the promotion never came.
Not because of some conspiracy.
His evaluations were:
solid,
not exceptional.
He had leadership strengths.
Also complaints about:
temper,
rigidity,
conflict with younger officers.
Nothing career-ending.
Enough.
The department changed leadership twice.
Frank stayed:
lieutenant.
Then I made colonel.
He became strange around:
Mom.
According to her later, whenever my name appeared in:
an Army article,
local news,
a ceremony photo,
Frank became dismissive.
“Political promotion.”
“Public-relations crap.”
“Army loves putting a woman in front of cameras now.”
Mom would say:
“Frank.”
He would answer:
“What?”
“It’s true.”
At first she defended me.
Then stopped.
Not because she agreed.
Because every defense became:
an argument.
That was how silence worked in their house.
Small surrender.
Temporary peace.

Repeated until one person’s version became the only version spoken aloud.
