Chapter 6 - The Financial Papers My Mother Wanted Were Not Proof of Theft

After Frank’s arrest, I expected the paperwork to reveal:
embezzlement,
secret loans,
stolen retirement.
It didn’t.
Reality was more complicated.
Frank and Elaine had:
joint checking,
joint savings,
individual retirement accounts,
a home-equity line,
one investment account originally funded from Mom’s inheritance.
Frank had moved:
money
without telling her enough.
But he was legally authorized on several joint accounts.
Some spending was:
reasonable.
Vehicle repairs.
Home improvements.
Insurance premiums.
Some was more questionable.
$18,000 toward a classic car Frank never discussed with:
Mom.
$11,500 transferred to help Frank’s adult son from his first marriage.
A $32,000 draw on the HELOC related partly to the garage project and partly to debt consolidation.
Not everything was:
illegal.
Much of it was:
marital financial conflict.
The important document was not a bank statement.
It was a draft power of attorney.
My mother wanted:
Frank removed as primary agent.
She wanted me named:
instead.
That was why she asked me home.
Not to seize:
money.
To change who could manage things if her stroke worsened.
She was afraid Frank would:
override decisions
if she became less capable.
That was about:
control.
May you like
Not simply dollars.
