Chapter 1 - The Slap at the Table

Warm afternoon sunlight spilled across the dark oak walls of the private dining salon, turning the brass chandeliers soft and golden above the long formal table. Claire Bennett stood beside it in a white service blouse, black apron, and black trousers, holding the same leather menu folder she had been told to carry. Her blonde hair was pinned in a neat low bun. She looked composed if you didn’t look too closely at her eyes.

Daniel Bennett, her father, sat at the table in a black dress shirt, reading over tasting notes he had not even realized had been prepared by his own daughter.

Serena Bennett rose so suddenly her chair scraped the floor.

Claire barely had time to look up before Serena was directly in front of her, face tight with anger.

“YOU’RE STAFF HERE—ACT LIKE IT!”

Then Serena slapped her.

It was fast, hard, and loud enough to crack through the whole room. Claire recoiled sideways, one hand flying to her cheek, but she never let go of the menu folder. Her eyes filled instantly. Not just from pain. From humiliation.

Serena pointed straight into her face.

“YOUR FATHER DOESN’T WANT YOU AT HIS TABLE!”

That was the moment Daniel finally stopped seeing a tense dinner and started seeing something deeply wrong.

He turned in his chair and stared at his daughter. Claire looked shattered, but there was also something else in her expression—something that looked less like surprise and more like the collapse of one last attempt to endure quietly.

“CLAIRE—DID SHE KNOW WHO YOU WERE?” Daniel shouted.

Serena stiffened.

Claire looked directly at her father, tears trembling on her lashes.

“She knew,” Claire said loudly, voice breaking. “She said you wanted me gone.”

Daniel froze.

For a split second the room went completely still.

Serena turned toward him, suddenly panicked. She started to lift one hand, as if she could still get ahead of it, still explain it away, still control the room the way she always had.

Daniel pointed at her from his chair before she could speak.

Then he rose so sharply his chair rocked backward.

“I NEVER SAID THAT!”

Serena’s face drained of color.

Claire stood there clutching the menu folder and staring at her father through tears, while he stared at his wife with the stunned fury of a man realizing that the distance between himself and his daughter had not happened naturally at all.

It had been engineered.

And Serena knew, from the way his expression changed, that the lie she had been living inside for months had finally broken open in the worst possible room.
