Chapter 9 - The First Honest Conversation They’d Had in Months

After the confrontation in the dining salon, Daniel sent Serena to the library and told her not to leave the house.

Then he sat with Claire in the breakfast room, where there were no chandeliers, no formal table, and no audience for anybody’s pride.

Gracefully or not, the truth started coming out.

Claire told him about the job.

About the first time Serena handed her a service blouse.

About being told to stay invisible when he was on the property.

About invitations Serena said he didn’t want her to accept.

About texts Serena claimed he’d sent through her when he was “too overwhelmed” to deal with father-daughter tension.

Daniel listened without interrupting. At first his face looked furious. Then it looked sick.

“You should have called me.”

“I did,” Claire said quietly.

That made him look up.

She swallowed. “Twice. Both times she answered your phone.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She told me you were busy. Then later she told me you thought I was making everything emotional.”

He took his own phone from the table and opened his call history.

Nothing.

No missed calls from Claire on those dates.

That didn’t prove hacking or anything dramatic. It proved something simpler and more infuriating: Serena had sometimes been physically near his phone, and Claire had been calling the line Serena picked up because he left it lying around.

Then Claire told him the part that hit hardest.

“She said if I pushed too hard, you’d let me stay in the family financially, but you were done treating me like I still belonged in your actual life.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had never said anything remotely like that. But he knew, with a kind of moral nausea, how believable it might have sounded after months of distance and formality.

When he finally spoke, his voice cracked.

“Claire, I thought you were the one asking for space.”

She laughed bitterly. “Well, she told me the exact opposite.”

That was the moment the whole structure came into focus—not just Serena’s cruelty, but the method. She had not needed a massive fake scandal. She only needed enough access to both of them, and enough confidence that each would try to be considerate rather than blunt.

Daniel looked at his daughter and understood that his own good manners had become a weapon in someone else’s hands.
