Chapter 5 - What Daniel Thought Was Happening
Daniel was not absent from Claire’s life. That was the painful part.
He called. He texted. He invited.
But over the previous eight months, almost every exchange between them had been subtly distorted before it reached the other side.
If Daniel asked Claire to join a foundation dinner, Serena would later tell him Claire said she was too busy or didn’t want to feel like a charity case around donors.
If Claire mentioned wanting to stop by the estate to see him, Serena would tell her Daniel had already filled the evening with business obligations and didn’t want “extra emotional complication.”
None of those lies were dramatic enough to trigger alarm on their own. Each one sounded plausible in isolation because they leaned on truths already present. Claire really was proud. Daniel really was busy. Their conversations really had become shorter and more awkward over time.
Instead of confronting the tension directly, both of them began respecting the other’s supposed distance.
That was Serena’s real skill.
She didn’t invent a giant scandal.
She simply kept nudging father and daughter into misreading each other.
When Daniel saw Claire less often, he thought she was pulling away because adulthood had made her more private. When Claire saw Daniel relax into formal, scheduled contact, she thought Serena had been telling the truth: that her father loved her, but in a resigned, dutiful way now, not with the same instinctive closeness they once had.
He still sent money into the educational trust he had established for her graduate degree if she ever wanted it.
He still asked, through Serena sometimes, whether Claire needed anything.
And because real care still existed beneath the manipulation, neither of them recognized how much of their estrangement had been manufactured.
Daniel even believed the job at the estate was something Claire had chosen strategically.
Serena told him Claire wanted to “earn her own credibility in hospitality” and did not want him interfering. Daniel, who admired independence in almost everyone but especially in his daughter, thought the best way to respect that was not to push.
The irony of that would later make him sick.
The space he believed he was honoring was the same space Serena had been using to separate them.
And by the time he asked for that private tasting dinner in the dining salon, he thought he was offering Claire a gentle way back into the family.
