Chapter 10 - Rosa Had Been Paying for Groceries With Her Pension
The part that made Vittorio angriest at himself came from Rosa’s bank statements.
She had spent nearly $2,700 of her own money in five months.
Milk.
Fruit.
Bread.
Cereal.
Soup.
School snacks.
Children’s vitamins.
She was sixty-seven.
Planning retirement.
Living comfortably but not extravagantly.
And she had been buying food for Vittorio’s children because his wife controlled the household account and he was too absent to notice.
He reimbursed Rosa immediately.
She resisted.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“I fed children. That is not a debt.”
“It became a debt when you had to do it because I failed to see what was happening.”
Rosa looked at him for a long time.
Then accepted.
But she gave him one condition.
“Do not turn me into the hero.”
Vittorio frowned.
“Why?”
“Because then everyone gets to tell themselves this ended well because one good employee saved the children.”
She pointed upstairs.
“This happened because too many adults assumed someone else was checking.”
The sentence stayed with him.
Rosa had helped.
But the solution could not depend on another Rosa existing next time.
The household needed systems.
Independent grocery access.
School contacts that came directly to Vittorio too.
Regular child check-ins without Vanessa present.
Medical records he actually reviewed.
Boring things.
