Chapter 14 - The First Dinner Where Nobody Asked Permission

Almost a year after the formal dining-room scene, Vittorio stopped using that room.
Not permanently.
Just for a while.
The children hated it.
Too much chandelier light.
Too many memories.
So most dinners happened in the kitchen.
Small wooden table.
Four ordinary chairs.
Rosa sometimes joined them.
One Tuesday, Owen finished his pasta and looked toward Vittorio.
“Can I have more?”
Vittorio almost answered automatically.
Then he noticed the way Owen asked.
Careful.
Prepared for refusal.
“You don’t need permission because you behaved,” he said.
Owen frowned.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
The boy thought.
Then smiled slightly.
“Can I still ask because it’s polite?”
Vittorio laughed.
“Yes.”
“Then can I have more?”
“Absolutely.”
Ivy pushed the serving bowl toward him before Vittorio could move.
Owen took another spoonful.
Nothing happened.
No lecture.
No punishment.
No adult watching his plate like a judge.
Rosa looked away quickly.
Vittorio knew she was hiding tears.
He pretended not to notice.
