Chapter 14 - The Development Deal Died Without Emily

The property deal eventually collapsed.
Not because Emily heroically defeated a corporation.
The economics changed.
Interest rates rose.
Construction costs increased.
Two other landowners refused to sell.
The developer withdrew.
Celeste had damaged relationships over a transaction that never happened.
That became its own lesson.
She had treated one projected future as inevitable.
Then harmed real people in service of it.
The future disappeared.
The harm remained.
Emily kept the cottage.
Eventually, when her health stabilized, she converted a detached garage into a small design studio and returned to part-time work.
Not wealthy.
Not magically cured.
Stable enough.
Sadie planted strawberries beside the porch because Rebecca had once grown them there.
Life became ordinary again.
