Chapter 7 - Celeste Had Been Using My Electronic Approval

The legal review became ugly quickly.
Celeste had not forged my signature.
That would have made the case simpler.
Instead, she used something more ordinary.
Administrative delegation.
Months earlier, I had authorized her to approve routine property correspondence while I traveled.
Maintenance notices.
Insurance requests.
Scheduling.
Minor expenses.
She expanded “routine” far beyond what I intended.
Several letters to Emily carried my digital authorization footer.
Not an actual signature.
An automated board approval code tied to a system I had allowed Celeste to use.
Technically, she could initiate communications.
She could not unilaterally force a sale.
But Emily didn’t know the difference.
The letters looked official.
My name sat beneath them.
When I saw the first one, I felt sick.
Grant Mercer — Board Director
Emily stared at me.
“You see why I thought you knew?”
“Yes.”
“Sadie thought you wanted us gone.”
That hurt more.
I had not threatened my sister.
But I had built a system where someone else could make a threat sound like mine.
Responsibility does not always require direct intention.
