Chapter 1 - The question Margaret was afraid Robert would ask

Warm afternoon sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Hale family’s private winery pavilion, washing the pale stone floor in gold and revealing endless Virginia vineyard rows beyond the glass.

Seven-year-old Lucas Hale sat at the long dining table in a beige polo and gray trousers.

He had barely touched his lunch.

His eyes were already wet.

Margaret Hale stood directly behind him.

At sixty-seven, she looked immaculate in an elegant navy dress and pearls. Nothing in her polished appearance matched the cruelty in her face.

“Grandma, I’m not hungry.”

Margaret grabbed the back of his head.

Then she drove his face straight down into the food on his plate.

Lucas cried out.

Food smeared across his cheek and nose.

Several relatives froze.

Margaret immediately yanked him upright by one arm, pulling him completely out of the chair.

“GET UP. YOU DON’T DESERVE TO EAT AT MY TABLE.”

Lucas started crying.

His father, Eric, did not protect him.

He stepped forward and seized the boy by both upper arms.

“Come on.”

“Dad, stop!”

Eric roughly dragged Lucas toward the doorway.

The boy struggled, trying to pull his feet beneath him.

Behind them, Margaret grabbed Lucas’s plate.

She smashed it onto the stone floor.

Ceramic shattered.

Food splattered across the ground.

Then Robert Hale entered from the opposite side of the pavilion.

He stopped.

His eyes moved across the room.

Lucas crying in Eric’s grip.

Margaret standing beside the broken plate.

Food smeared across his grandson’s face.

Something in Robert’s expression hardened immediately.

He crossed the room without speaking.

Eric barely had time to react before Robert pulled Lucas completely away from him.

Robert placed the boy safely behind his body and wrapped one protective arm around him.

Lucas clutched his grandfather’s jacket.

“Grandpa…” he sobbed. “They wouldn’t let me leave.”

Robert looked down at him.

Then slowly turned toward his son and wife.

Margaret stormed toward him.

“HE’S A USELESS LITTLE BRAT. STOP TREATING HIM LIKE HE MATTERS.”

Robert stared at her.

Then planted one hand against her upper shoulder and shoved her backward.

Margaret stumbled several steps toward the table.

Eric caught her before she fell.

The pavilion went silent.

Robert stepped toward the head of the table, keeping Lucas behind him.

His eyes never left Margaret.

“DO I NEED TO REMIND YOU WHAT YOU DID?”

Margaret’s anger vanished.

Instantly.

The color left her face.

Eric looked sharply at his mother.

“What’s he talking about?”

Margaret said nothing.

Robert watched her.

He had been married to this woman for forty-two years.

He knew every version of her silence.

This one was fear.

And three days earlier, Robert had finally discovered why.

Because Lucas was not the first person Margaret had taught the Hale family to call difficult.

Years earlier, she had used the same word about Lucas’s mother.

And by the time anyone realized what she had been doing, Sarah Hale had already been pushed almost completely out of her son’s life.
