Chapter 11 - I Had To Answer For The Slap Too

The camera captured my slap.
Clearly.
I could have argued emotion.
Protection.
Shock.
I did not.
By the time I struck Vanessa, she was no longer actively attacking Mom.
I had entered.
She stepped toward me.
Mom was on the floor.
I was furious.
And I hit my wife.
That was retaliation.
Not necessary defense.
The distinction mattered.
Marina security documented the incident.
I gave an accurate statement.
I did not ask staff to delete the clip.
Did not claim the camera angle was misleading.
Did not turn my anger into heroism.
Mom told me later:
“I needed you to help me. I didn’t need you to hit her.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
“You scared me.”
That was difficult to hear.
Not because I had hit Mom.
I hadn’t.
Because seeing her son become violent added another threat to a room where she was already frightened.
I apologized to Vanessa for striking her.
That surprised everyone.
It did not mean I forgave her.
Did not mean I wanted the marriage saved.
It meant one wrong action did not become right because the other person had done something worse.
I also accepted the legal consequences attached to my behavior.
No special family treatment.
No board intervention.
No quietly disappearing footage.
If we were going to use the security system to expose Vanessa’s conduct, I could not demand the system ignore mine.
That decision changed how Mom looked at me afterward.
She did not trust me again instantly.
May you like
But I think she finally believed I was trying to build a family where truth applied to everyone.
Including me.
