Chapter 6 - The First Video Showed Vanessa Moving The Pen

The first archived clip came from seventeen days earlier.

Mom sat at the console table.

Vanessa stood beside her.

A document lay open.

The video had no usable conversation audio, but the body language required very little interpretation.

Mom pushed the paper away.

Vanessa pushed it back.

Mom shook her head.

Vanessa tapped the signature line.

Mom stood.

Vanessa moved in front of her.

Blocked her path.

Then placed a pen into Mom’s hand.

Mom dropped it onto the table.

Vanessa’s face changed.

Even without sound, I recognized the expression.

The same cold anger I had seen after the kick.

The next clip was worse.

Mom entered carrying a folder.

Vanessa removed one page.

Replaced it with another.

Mom signed the first two pages in the stack.

Then stopped at the third.

She read it.

Looked at Vanessa.

Then tore the page in half.

That page, Mom later told us, was a share-transfer consent.

She had been signing routine vendor renewals.

Vanessa inserted the transfer paper among them.

Mom noticed.

The third clip showed Mom pointing toward the door.

Vanessa refused to leave for nearly four minutes.

The fourth showed Vanessa standing inches from Mom, gesturing sharply toward a document while Mom repeatedly shook her head.

None of those clips alone proved a crime.

Together, they destroyed Vanessa’s story that Mom had been enthusiastically trying to give her shares away and then “forgetting.”

My mother had been resisting.

Consistently.

Visibly.

For weeks.

I watched the clips in silence.

Then Mom said:

“Do you understand now?”

I could barely look at her.

“Yes.”

“No. Do you understand what you did?”

That hurt more.

Because she was not talking about Vanessa.

She was talking about me.

Every time Mom told me something was wrong, I asked whether she might be confused.

The camera had believed her before her son did.
