Chapter 8 - Vanessa Had Been Using My Name Too

The footage exposed coercion.
The documents exposed something else.
Vanessa had repeatedly told lawyers and advisers that I supported Mom transferring shares to her.
I had never said that.
I had said:
“If Mom wants to give you something, that’s her decision.”
Vanessa converted that into:
“Daniel supports the transfer.”
Not the same sentence.
But close enough to sound plausible if repeated confidently.
A lawyer’s file note recorded Vanessa saying:
Daniel believes eighteen percent is appropriate and wants the matter completed before year-end.
I had never selected eighteen percent.
Another email:
Daniel is reluctant to pressure his mother directly because of her age, so I am handling communications.
Also false.
Then came the one that made me stand up from the table.
Daniel agrees Margaret’s recent confusion makes timing important.
I had expressed concern about Mom’s memory.
I had never said confusion made a transfer urgent.
Vanessa took my worry and converted it into leverage.
The same way she took Mom’s hesitation and converted it into incapacity.
Every person became evidence for the outcome she wanted.
When I confronted her, she said:
“You knew I wanted ownership.”
“That doesn’t mean I authorized you to speak for me.”
“We’re married.”
“That doesn’t mean you speak for me.”
She looked genuinely offended by that distinction.
That was the moment I understood how deeply our marriage had blurred consent.
Vanessa believed partnership meant presumed permission.
If she knew what I would “eventually” agree with, she felt entitled to act in advance.
Mom had been saying the same thing for months.
May you like
I called it hostility.
Now I was hearing it directly.
