Chapter 1 - The Push

By the time Ryan Hale stepped onto the rooftop terrace, the pool was still shuddering from the splash.
A second earlier, everything had looked calm in the late-afternoon light. Caleb’s black stroller had been parked beside the pale stone deck near the water. Nora Bennett had been carrying a folded baby blanket out from the suite. Vivian Hale stood behind the stroller in her champagne satin dress, one hand resting lightly on the handle, her face as smooth and elegant as ever.
Then she shoved it.
Not a stumble. Not an accident. A hard, deliberate thrust straight toward the pool.
The stroller tipped over the edge and vanished into the blue with a violent splash. Water erupted across the deck. Nora froze for half a heartbeat, then screamed, “NO!” and sprinted toward the water.
Vivian didn’t move to help.
She only stared at the pool and said in a cold, level voice, “Let’s see who he believes now.”
Then Nora dove in.
She hit the water in one clean, desperate plunge and vanished below the surface. The stroller had sunk awkwardly sideways, its wheels twisted, one side caught briefly in the drag of the canopy. Caleb was strapped inside, stunned into silence for one terrible instant before his cry finally tore loose underwater in a blur of bubbles.
Nora reached him, ripped him free with both hands, clutched him against her chest, and kicked upward.
When Ryan burst through the open rooftop doors, dripping sunlight behind him, Nora had just broken the surface. She gasped for air, dragged Caleb toward the edge, and lifted him onto the deck first. He started crying immediately—loud, frightened, alive.
Ryan’s eyes locked on his soaked baby.
Then on Nora, scrambling up behind him, soaked to the skin.
Then on Vivian, who was already pointing.
“She threw him in!” Vivian shouted. “Get that trash away from your son!”
Ryan turned so fast it almost looked like a reflex. His face had gone white with shock and rage. Caleb was screaming. Nora was on her knees beside the pool, one hand still reaching for the baby she had just pulled from the water.
“What did you do?!” Ryan roared.
Then, before Nora could answer, he slapped her.
Hard.
Her head snapped sideways. She fell across the wet stone and stared up at him, stunned, breathing hard from the dive.
“I SAVED HIM,” she choked out.
But Ryan had already bent down, gathered Caleb into his arms, and turned away from her.
Vivian stepped up beside him at once, laying a possessive hand against his back. “Stay away from my family,” she said to Nora with quiet contempt.
Nora stayed where she was, one cheek burning red, her hair plastered to her face, eyes fixed on Caleb as he cried in Ryan’s arms.
Then, while Ryan held the baby tight and Vivian stood beside him pretending to be horrified, the camera mounted high on the rooftop column stared silently down over the entire terrace.
It had seen everything.

And none of them knew yet how much that would matter.
