Chapter 13 - The Other Evidence
Two days later, Michael returned with another piece of Vivian’s plan.
It wasn’t in the camera system this time.
It was in a draft legal packet saved to a secure folder that Vivian had no business accessing but had apparently assembled through copied templates and notes from her talks with counsel. She had titled it Temporary Domestic Stability Measures.
The language was careful, but the strategy was obvious.
If an employee was implicated in negligent endangerment of a minor, that employee could be removed immediately.
If the father displayed violent or unstable conduct in the aftermath, a spouse could argue the need for emergency domestic control while the household situation was “stabilized.”
In plain English, Vivian had been aiming to stand in the middle after the chaos and make herself indispensable.
She wanted Nora gone.
Ryan damaged.
Caleb dependent.
And herself in control.
Michael set the folder down on Ryan’s desk and said, “She was constructing the legal language before the pool incident ever occurred.”
Ryan flipped through the pages without really seeing them.
Then he noticed one handwritten note in the margin of a printout:
Need him to react first.
His fingers went numb.
It was so simple.
Not just manipulate him after the fact.
Trigger him.
Count on him.
Use his own temper as the second half of the trap.
That night Ryan stood alone on the rooftop terrace for a long time, staring at the water. He could still imagine the stroller going over. Still hear Nora’s scream. Still see himself charging into the frame of his own life too late and making everything worse before he knew enough to act.
When he finally turned to go inside, his eyes lifted to the camera on the column.
The silent black lens looked back at him.
He had spent most of his adult life thinking danger announced itself loudly.
But the truth had come to him from something quiet.
A machine that had no loyalty, no fear, and no need to please him.
It simply saw.
