Chapter 7 - The Apology Nora Didn’t Want

“He’s safe,” Ryan said.

That was the only reason Nora let him inside.

He gave her the whole truth without trying to soften any of it. The footage. The shove. The way Vivian had straightened her dress before turning to accuse her. The way Ryan had watched himself on camera, reliving the exact moment he raised his hand against the person who had saved his son’s life.

Nora listened without interrupting.

When he finally said, “I’m sorry,” she looked away.

Ryan swallowed. “I know that doesn’t fix it.”

“No,” she said quietly. “It doesn’t.”

The room sat heavy around them.

Then Ryan said the hardest part out loud.

“I hit you because I believed the person who was easiest to believe. My wife. My own panic. The version that let me think I had arrived in time to protect my son, instead of too late to see what was really happening.”

Nora folded her arms over herself. “That’s the first honest thing you’ve said since the terrace.”

He accepted it.

“I need your help,” he said.

Nora’s expression changed at once. “With Caleb?”

“Yes.”

She shook her head once, not refusing but thinking. “If I go back there, it’s for him. Not for you. And not while she has unrestricted access to him.”

“She won’t.”

“Can you promise that?”

Ryan met her eyes. “Yes.”

That mattered.

Nora was quiet for a long moment before nodding once. “Then I’ll come back long enough to make sure he’s okay. But after that, you handle your wife.”

Ryan almost said former wife, but stopped himself. He had not yet confronted Vivian. He had not yet heard what lie she would tell when she realized the camera had survived her.

As if reading his mind, Nora asked, “Does she know you’ve seen it?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Ryan frowned. “Why good?”

“Because if she planned that shove, then she planned the accusation too. And people who plan that much don’t stop at one lie.”

Ryan thought about the maintenance request. The HR complaints. The way Vivian had tried to isolate Nora from Caleb for months.

“You think this was bigger than today?”

Nora held his gaze.

“I think today is the first time you were forced to see it.”

That stayed with him all the way back to the penthouse.

But the real shock came an hour later, when Ryan’s family attorney returned his message and asked why Vivian had been making quiet inquiries for weeks about emergency domestic guardianship authority in the event of “household instability.”
