Chapter 13 - Eleanor Chose Where She Wanted to Live

One thing mattered to me more than fixing my guilt.

Mom needed choice.

After Chloe left the house, I assumed Eleanor would move back in permanently.

She surprised me.

“No.”

I stared at her.

“You don’t want to come home?”

“That house is yours, David.”

“It was yours too.”

“For six months.”

“We can make changes.”

She smiled gently.

“You’re trying to repair what happened by giving me everything.”

She was right.

Rebecca had a small apartment above her detached garage that had been renovated years earlier.

Private entrance.

Ground-floor lift.

Kitchenette.

Garden view.

Close to family.

Mom wanted that instead.

“I want to visit,” she said. “I want dinners. I want the children climbing all over me. But I also want a door I control.”

That sentence hurt.

Not because I disagreed.

Because I understood why she needed it.

So we helped her move.

No nursing home.

No forced return to my house.

Her decision.

That was the exact opposite of what Chloe had tried to take from her.
