Chapter 3 - Chloe Had Been Sending Me Pictures of Uneaten Meals

I went through my phone that night.
The pattern was everywhere.
Three weeks earlier, Chloe sent me a photograph of a full dinner plate sitting untouched in front of Mom’s empty chair.
Her message:
Your mother refused dinner again. Says nothing tastes right.
I replied:
Maybe call her doctor tomorrow.
Another picture.
Soup untouched.
She says she isn’t hungry. I’m getting worried.
Then:
She barely ate lunch. This isn’t normal.
I remembered those messages because they frightened me.
My mother had lost nine pounds in two months.
Her doctor had mentioned nutrition.
I had begun wondering whether she was entering a more serious decline.
Now I showed the pictures to Mason.
“Was Grandma refusing this food?”
He looked confused.
“No.”
“Then why didn’t she eat it?”
“Mom took it away.”
My stomach dropped.
“When?”
“Before Grandma could eat.”
Lily nodded vigorously.
“Mom says take a picture first.”
There it was.
Chloe had been photographing food before removing it.
The image was technically real.
The explanation was false.
Just like that, weeks of “evidence” changed meaning.
My mother was not refusing meals.
She was being denied them.

And Chloe had been teaching me to see the consequences as proof Eleanor could no longer live safely at home.
