Chapter 6 - Chloe’s Goal Wasn’t Money—She Wanted the House Back

At first, I kept searching for a financial motive.

Mom had savings, but not enough to explain this.

No hidden inheritance.

No giant trust.

No property waiting to transfer.

The truth turned out to be more ordinary.

And somehow uglier.

Chloe resented living with my mother.

Before Mom’s injury, our household had been four people.

Chloe controlled everything.

Dinner times.

Children’s schedules.

Decor.

Holidays.

Who visited.

Then Mom needed temporary help after surgery.

I said she could stay with us for three months.

Three months became six because her recovery was slower than expected.

The children adored having her there.

I liked coming home and seeing them doing homework with Grandma at the dining table.

Chloe did not.

She began calling Mom “the fifth wheel.”

Then “your permanent guest.”

Then, apparently when I wasn’t around:

“parasite.”

A neighbor later remembered hearing Chloe complain:

“I did not marry David to spend my forties running a retirement home.”

There was no master fortune to steal.

Chloe wanted her house, her routine, and her authority back.

But simply telling me to throw out my recovering mother would have made Chloe look cruel.

So she needed another story.

Eleanor could no longer live safely with us.

Eleanor refused food.

Eleanor was declining.

Eleanor frightened the children.

If I believed those things—

sending Mom away would feel responsible.

Not selfish.

That was the lie Chloe had been building.
