Chapter 1 - The Two Black Bags

Nathan Cole had barely closed the door of his black SUV when he saw Emma crossing the lawn.
At first he thought she was dragging garden bags.
Then one tore slightly at the top.
A pink sweater appeared.
Her sweater.
Nathan stopped.
“Emma?”
His seven-year-old daughter looked up.
Her blonde hair was tangled around her face. Her cream floral dress was dirty at one knee. Two small scratches crossed her cheek—not deep, not bleeding, but fresh enough to make Nathan’s chest tighten.
Each of the black bags beside her looked almost as large as she was.
“Dad…”
She started crying.
Nathan crossed the lawn immediately.
Emma tried to pull one bag again.
It barely moved.
Nathan crouched in front of her and took both shoulders gently.
“What happened?”
Her mouth trembled.
“She threw me out.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“Who did this to you?”
Emma did not answer verbally.
She looked toward the mansion.
Nathan followed her gaze.
The sweeping stone staircase rose from the courtyard toward tall glass doors.
For several seconds, nobody appeared.
Emma began crying harder.
Nathan pulled her closer without moving her from where she stood.
Then the doors opened.
Victoria stepped outside.
Gold satin dress.
Black sunglasses.
Perfect brunette hair.
No urgency.
No surprise at seeing Emma on the lawn with her belongings.
Nathan slowly stood.
Victoria began descending the staircase.
Halfway down, she stopped.
Then removed her sunglasses.
Her eyes went directly to Emma.
“I TOLD THAT LITTLE BRAT TO GET HER TRASH OFF MY PROPERTY.”
Nathan stared at his wife.
For a moment he seemed unable to process the sentence.
Then something behind him caught his attention.
The rear door of his SUV was still open.
His black travel bag sat inside.
Nathan had left it empty that morning.
Now the zipper was open.
Something blue and white protruded from an inner pocket.
A travel document.
Nathan’s eyes narrowed.
He reached inside just far enough to see the edge.
Then looked back toward Victoria.
Emma immediately pressed herself against his waist.
Nathan put one protective arm around her.
“Then explain what the hell is in my bag.”
Victoria’s expression tightened.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
Emma felt Nathan’s body go rigid.
Victoria did not answer.

And Nathan understood that whatever had happened between his wife and daughter had started before Emma ever stepped onto that lawn carrying two garbage bags.
