Chapter 12 - Victoria Left California, But Not in Secret

She took the overseas job four months later.

Not the next morning.

The first trip was canceled after the estate confrontation.

Julian went alone.

Victoria remained to handle divorce filings, property disclosures, and the consequences of what she had done.

Eventually, with legal matters stable, she relocated.

She and Julian continued their relationship.

They did not immediately marry.

No runaway ending.

Victoria built the hospitality project she had wanted.

It did well.

Nathan heard through business circles.

He felt:

nothing dramatic.

A little sadness.

Some anger.

Mostly distance.

Then Emma found out Victoria lived overseas.

“Did she leave because of me?”

Nathan answered immediately:

“No.”

“Sure?”

“Yes.”

“She wanted that job before the day with the bags.”

“Did you want her to stay?”

Nathan thought.

“Before everything happened, part of me did.”

“And after?”

“No.”

Emma accepted.

Then:

“Is she happy?”

“I don’t know.”

That was true.

No need to teach Emma that hurting someone guarantees misery.

Life is not moral bookkeeping.

Victoria could build a good career after doing something cruel.

Emma could heal without requiring:

her failure.

May you like

That became another lesson Nathan did not expect.
