Chapter 13 - Emma Kept One of the Black Bags

Years passed.

One of the two garbage bags was thrown away immediately because it tore.

The other somehow ended up folded beneath boxes in the garage.

When Emma was twelve, she found it.

Nathan came downstairs and saw her holding it.

His chest tightened.

“You okay?”

Emma looked at the bag.

“Is this the one?”

“Yes.”

She opened it.

Ordinary black plastic.

Nothing special.

Then laughed.

“I thought it was bigger.”

Nathan understood.

At seven, dragging it across a lawn made it enormous.

At twelve, it was:

a garbage bag.

Emma asked:

“Why did you keep it?”

“I didn’t mean to.”

“Can I throw it away?”

“Of course.”

She did.

No ritual.

No burning.

No dramatic speech.

Trash went into:

trash.

Then she returned inside.

That night Nathan realized he had spent years thinking the bag would always symbolize the worst day of his daughter’s childhood.

Emma apparently had other priorities.

School.

Friends.

Soccer.

A boy named Tyler she insisted was not her boyfriend.

Good.

Trauma had a place.

May you like

Not every place.
