Chapter 1 - NOBODY LEAVES

Emma Carter heard Lily’s birthday song ending as she reached the top of the staircase.

Below her, thirty guests stood beneath gold balloons and warm pendant lights, smiling toward a cake decorated with six pink candles. Champagne glasses shone in Patricia’s hand and Robert’s hand. A string quartet played softly near the windows.

Then Emma looked down at the child in her arms.

Lily’s head rested against her shoulder. Her birthday dress was wrinkled beneath a light blanket. Her skin felt cold. Her breathing was shallow but steady.

Emma ran.

Guests stepped aside as she rushed down the staircase.

“Who hurt my daughter?!”

The music stopped.

Patricia remained beside the cake, elegant in silver silk, her face unreadable. Robert stood next to her in a formal black suit. Neither moved toward their granddaughter.

That frightened Emma almost as much as Lily’s stillness.

She had found Lily upstairs in Patricia’s private sitting room, lying on a chaise beside a broken music box. The door had been locked from the outside.

Emma had screamed for help. No one answered until she kicked the door hard enough to split the frame.

Now the front door opened and police officers entered with paramedics behind them.

Emma shielded Lily and pointed toward Patricia and Robert.

“They know what happened!”

Robert stepped forward.

“She’s lying!”

Officer Mason moved between them and raised one hand.

“Stay where you are, sir.”

Mason was calm, broad-shouldered, and watchful. He checked Lily’s pulse, then looked at her pupils while a paramedic opened a medical bag.

Emma fought to hold back tears.

“Please. She was awake ten minutes ago.”

Patricia slowly raised her champagne glass.

“She brought this on herself.”

The room fell silent.

Mason turned.

“What does that mean?”

Patricia’s expression changed only slightly. A tightening near one eye. A brief pause before she breathed.

Robert glanced at her.

It was the first sign that her words had not been planned.

Additional officers moved closer.

Robert stepped back.

Patricia’s fingers loosened. Her glass slipped and shattered across the marble floor.

“Nobody leaves,” Mason said.

The paramedics placed Lily on a stretcher. Emma followed them toward the door, but Mason stopped her long enough to ask one question.

“Where did you find her?”

“Upstairs. In Patricia’s sitting room.”

Patricia spoke quickly.

“That room is always locked.”

Mason looked at her.

Emma did too.

She had not told anyone the door was locked.

Robert closed his eyes for one brief second.

Mason noticed.

As Lily was carried outside, flashing police lights filled the birthday decorations with red and blue. Emma climbed into the ambulance and held her daughter’s hand.

Before the doors closed, she saw Patricia whisper something to Robert.

He looked toward the staircase.

Not toward Lily.

Toward the room where Emma had found her.

And in that moment, Emma understood that whatever had happened upstairs had not ended when Lily lost consciousness.

Someone in the house was still afraid of what the child had seen.
