Chapter 6 - THE CRASH THAT NEVER HAPPENED
Federal investigators joined the case after reviewing the defective-module evidence.
They identified six aircraft still operating with suspect components. All were grounded before anyone was hurt.
The second failure Owen feared never happened.
That decision saved lives.
Finding Owen proved harder.
He used prepaid phones and moved between rural motels. Patricia had paid him after David’s death, but not to leave the country.
To disappear.
Mason traced the most recent call to a closed roadside diner seventy miles north.
Inside, officers found blood on the floor but no body.
A security camera across the highway recorded Owen escaping through the rear door as a black SUV arrived.
The vehicle belonged to a security contractor employed by Carter Aeronautics.
Robert claimed no knowledge of the operation.
Patricia refused to answer.
Emma stayed with Lily at a protected location. The girl’s strength returned slowly, but she woke from nightmares asking whether the door was locked.
One evening, Lily drew the birthday room.
Every guest appeared as a circle.
Patricia stood near the lemonade.
Robert stood by the staircase.
Behind the curtain, Lily drew another person.
Emma pointed gently.
“Who is that?”
“The picture man.”
The party photographer.
He had been hired by Patricia and had disappeared before police ordered everyone to remain.
His name was Caleb Vance.
He was also the security contractor’s operations director.
Mason searched Caleb’s studio.
He found no photographs from the birthday party.
But he found equipment used to clone electronic keys and erase security systems.
A hidden laptop contained footage from the estate’s second floor.
Patricia had lied about the cameras being disabled.
Robert switched off the official system.
Caleb recorded through independent devices.
The video showed Lily entering the sitting room and opening the music box.
Patricia followed.
The audio captured David’s voice beginning his warning.
Patricia grabbed the box.
Robert arrived and argued with her.
Then Caleb stepped into view.
He took the lemonade from Patricia’s hand, crushed tablets into it, and placed it beside Lily.
Patricia saw him.
Robert saw him.
Neither stopped him.
Lily drank because Caleb told her Emma had sent it.
Minutes later, she collapsed.
Patricia ordered Caleb to remove the music box.
Robert wiped the table.
Then Emma began breaking through the locked door.
Caleb escaped through a service stairwell.
The video proved who drugged Lily.
It also proved Patricia and Robert had allowed it to happen.
But why would Caleb risk harming a child for a recording that only repeated evidence already hidden in the hangar?
Mason examined David’s music-box design.
The recording was not stored in the box.
The box transmitted it from a remote server.
When Lily pressed the bird, she activated a file that David had programmed to send automatically to a federal regulator.
Caleb had not only removed evidence.
He had tried to stop a transmission.
