Chapter 7 - DAVID'S TESTIMONY
David’s recording lasted forty-three minutes.
His voice was calm at first.
He described altered inspection records, payments, false certifications, and meetings where Robert ordered engineers to remain silent.
Then his tone changed.
He said Patricia had discovered he was cooperating with federal investigators.
She warned him that the company would collapse, employees would lose pensions, and Lily would grow up blamed for destroying the Carter name.
David refused to withdraw.
He recorded his final meeting with Robert and Patricia through the music box.
Robert threatened to remove him from the company.
Patricia said, “You are forcing us to choose between one son and everything generations built.”
David answered, “If that is your choice, you already lost me.”
The final section concerned his car.
Owen Price had been ordered to install a compromised brake component that would fail gradually, appearing like ordinary wear. Owen claimed he replaced it with a safe part, but Caleb later accessed the garage.
David did not know whether the car remained safe.
He planned to take it to police the next morning.
He never reached them.
The recording was enough to indict Caleb for murder conspiracy, but not enough to prove Patricia or Robert ordered David’s death.
Owen was the missing link.
Police found him hiding inside an abandoned church after he contacted a federal tip line.
He was injured but alive.
Owen testified that Patricia gave him the original order to alter the brake system. He refused to complete it. Caleb discovered the refusal and finished the job.
Robert had approved a vague instruction to “make David understand the cost of betrayal,” but Owen did not hear him request murder.
Patricia’s attorney argued that she only intended to frighten David.
Caleb remained missing.
Then Robert requested another interview.
He brought a private ledger kept in a safe unknown to Patricia.
It documented years of illegal payments authorized by both of them.
Robert claimed he wanted to cooperate.
Mason remembered Owen’s warning.
Do not trust Robert just because he looks afraid.
The ledger had gaps. Several pages were removed.
Robert was offering enough truth to reduce his sentence while hiding something larger.
Mason asked where Caleb would go.
Robert said he did not know.
Mason placed Lily’s drawing of the party on the table.
In it, the photographer stood behind the curtain.
Robert stared at the picture.
His expression changed.
“What?” Mason asked.
Robert pointed to the shape Lily had drawn in Caleb’s hand.
It looked like a black rectangle.
A phone.
“He was recording Patricia,” Robert said.
“Why?”
“Because Caleb never worked for us.”
Robert finally revealed that Caleb had been placed inside Carter Aeronautics by an investment group attempting a hostile takeover. He helped Patricia hide crimes while secretly collecting evidence to blackmail her.
David’s death protected Patricia.
It also gave Caleb control.
