Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTERS' TABLE

On Sofia’s eighteenth birthday, the Delacroix trust transferred its first voting shares to her.
Valentina, sixteen, stood beside her during the ceremony.
The event took place in the same banquet hall where Patricia had humiliated them.
Lucia had considered another venue.
Sofia chose this one.
“We should finish the story where everyone thought it ended,” she said.
The hall looked different now. The old head table was gone. Round tables filled the room without raised platforms.
Employees, scholarship recipients, family members, and community partners sat together.
Andrés attended quietly.
Patricia remained in prison and had declined permission for her letters to be read publicly.
Sofia stepped to the microphone.
She did not speak about wealth.
She spoke about silence.
She remembered the adults who watched food slide down her dress and did nothing. She remembered her mother’s hand taking hers. She remembered walking through the ballroom doors.
“That was the first business lesson I ever learned,” Sofia said. “A room full of powerful people can still be weak.”
Lucia felt Valentina squeeze her hand.
After the ceremony, a server placed a large bowl of pasta on their table.
The girls laughed.
Andrés looked at Lucia.
“You built something better.”
“No,” she said. “We stopped protecting what was worse.”
He nodded.
Later, Sofia opened the sealed letter Patricia had written years earlier.
It contained no complete apology. Patricia explained, defended, and finally admitted fear.
Sofia folded it again.
“Do I have to answer?”
“No,” Lucia said.
“Do I have to forgive her?”
“No.”
“Then what do I have to do?”
Lucia looked around the hall.
“Choose what you carry forward.”
Sofia placed the letter in the family archive beside the forged waiver and the old name cards.
Not hidden.
Not honored.
Recorded.
At the end of the evening, Lucia stood with both daughters at the ballroom doors.
Years earlier, she had left through them with sauce on her dress, fear in her chest, and a folded document in her handbag.
Now Sofia held the trust papers.
Valentina held Lucia’s hand.
They walked back into the hall together.

The family secret had once been used to erase women.
Now the truth ensured that no daughter in the Delacroix family would ever again be told she did not belong at the table.
