Chapter 6 - THE COST OF SILENCE
The court hearing drew national attention.
Patricia entered in a navy suit, composed as ever.
Lucia testified about the banquet, the forged waiver, and the years of pressure.
Andrés testified next.
He admitted he knew Patricia manipulated family records, though he claimed he did not understand the full scheme. He acknowledged telling Lucia to stay quiet when Patricia insulted the girls.
Naomi asked why.
“Because peace was easier for me than protecting them.”
The answer was honest.
It was also devastating.
Patricia’s attorney tried to blame Elena. He suggested she targeted Mateo for money and abandoned Lucia.
Teresa produced Elena’s letters.
They showed a mother repeatedly trying to contact her child while Patricia intercepted every message.
One letter included a copy of a bank transfer.
Patricia had paid Elena’s aunt to move Lucia without leaving a forwarding address.
Lucia’s childhood had not been shaped by chance.
It had been designed.
Patricia finally requested permission to speak.
She said Mateo’s affair threatened the family. She insisted Elena’s branch would have destroyed the company through scandal and lawsuits.
“I protected thousands of employees,” she said.
Lucia looked at the workers seated behind her.
“You used them as an excuse.”
Patricia turned toward Sofia and Valentina.
“They are children. They cannot manage an empire.”
“They do not need to,” Lucia replied. “They need adults who will not steal it from them.”
The judge upheld the amendment, invalidated Lucia’s waiver, and removed Patricia permanently from the trust.
Criminal proceedings would continue separately.
Outside court, Andrés asked Lucia to delay the divorce.
“I’m changing.”
“You are reacting.”
“What difference does it make if I keep doing the right thing?”
“The difference is whether you do it when no one is watching.”
He looked toward the cameras outside.
Lucia handed him the petition.
“I am filing.”
He closed his eyes.
She did not feel triumph.
She felt grief for the marriage she had defended long after it stopped defending her.
Then Sofia and Valentina ran toward her.

For the first time, the family name behind them felt smaller than the future ahead.
