Chapter 5 - THE SURVIVING WITNESS
Teresa Vale was living under another name in a coastal town in Maine.
She agreed to speak only after Naomi promised federal protection.
Teresa revealed that Elena’s crash was not an accident.
A black sedan forced their car off the road. Teresa survived because she was thrown into brush below the embankment. She heard men searching for documents before emergency crews arrived.
She fled after receiving threats.
She had kept one item from the car: Mateo’s original trust amendment.
It named Elena’s descendants as equal beneficiaries and removed Patricia from control if she concealed the amendment.
Teresa mailed the document overnight.
Before it arrived, someone broke into Naomi’s office.
Nothing valuable was taken.
Only the locked cabinet containing case files was opened.
The intruder did not find Teresa’s document because Naomi had sent it directly to the courthouse.
Security footage showed a man connected to Patricia’s foundation.
Patricia was arrested for obstruction and conspiracy to destroy evidence.
The family board collapsed into panic.
Employees feared the hotels would close. Creditors demanded reassurance. Reporters followed Lucia everywhere.
Patricia’s attorneys argued that Lucia wanted revenge.
Lucia refused interviews.
Instead, she met workers at the flagship hotel and promised wages would continue during the court review.
Andrés joined her.
Some employees applauded him.
Lucia did not.
He was trying to repair damage, but repair was not redemption.
That evening, Sofia asked why Grandma Patricia hated them.
Lucia knelt beside the girls.
“She believed boys mattered more.”
“Do they?” Valentina asked.
“No.”
“Then why did everyone listen to her?”
“Because people sometimes obey cruel rules when those rules benefit them.”
Sofia thought for a moment.
“Daddy listened.”
“Yes.”
“Are you leaving him?”
Lucia looked at the folded divorce petition Naomi had prepared.
“I’m deciding what kind of home keeps us safe.”
The next morning, Teresa’s original amendment reached the court.
Its final clause surprised everyone.
Mateo had not divided control between Lucia and Andrés.
He had placed majority control in the hands of Lucia’s daughters once the concealment was proven.
