Chapter 4 - The Asylum Plot

"Dante, the maid is lying!" Victoria shrieked hysterically, thrashing in her chair, her burgundy gown ruined by her panicked sweating. "She stole those pills! She bruised your mother to frame me! I love you!"
"Why would she drug my mother, Clara?" Dante asked softly, entirely immune to his fiancée’s pathetic, fake tears.
Clara stood tall, projecting a fierce, protective bravery that left the wealthy guests in absolute awe.
"Because your mother refused to sign the revised prenuptial agreement," Clara explained, her voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel. "The document that transfers control of the family’s billion-dollar real estate trust to Victoria upon your marriage. She needed your mother out of the way."
Dante’s jaw locked so tightly the muscles ticked beneath his dark beard.
"And where exactly was she planning to take her tonight?" Dante demanded, remembering his mother's terrified plea.
Clara pulled a crumpled piece of paper from her apron—a printed email receipt she had dug out of Victoria's private trash can.
"At exactly midnight tonight," Clara read aloud, handing the paper to Dante, "a private, off-the-books medical transport team is arriving at the service entrance. Victoria paid them two hundred thousand dollars to forcibly remove your mother and lock her inside a corrupt psychiatric facility upstate. By morning, a judge on Victoria’s payroll was going to legally declare your mother incompetent."
The cinematic realism of the absolute, apocalyptic betrayal crushed the air in the room.
Victoria hadn't just been cruel. She had meticulously planned to abduct and imprison a seventy-year-old woman to steal a billionaire's empire.
