Chapter 4 - The Boss's Return

Cole Mercer was not a man who tolerated chaos in his own home. He was a man of intense, terrifying discipline and a strict, unyielding personal code of honor that separated him from the mindless thugs of the criminal underworld.
He was a tall, incredibly handsome man in his thirties, possessing a rugged, lethal aura that demanded absolute submission from everyone in his presence. His dark hair was perfectly styled, and the heavy, intricate black ink of his chest tattoos was visibly peaking through the unbuttoned collar of his dark shirt, a physical reminder of the brutal, violent life he had survived to claim his throne.
Cole had been away in Europe for the past month, single-handedly orchestrating the aggressive dismantling of a rival international cartel. He had returned to his estate tonight specifically to attend his own engagement gala, viewing the party as a necessary, tedious political alliance rather than a celebration of love.
When the heavy, oak double doors of the grand ballroom had swung open to announce his arrival, Cole had fully expected to see a sophisticated, elegant gathering of his wealthy associates and political allies drinking expensive champagne.
Instead, he walked into a suffocating, dead silence.
His dark, calculating eyes instantly bypassed the hundreds of terrified guests and locked directly onto the sweeping marble staircase. He saw his glamorous blonde fiancée holding a weapon. And then, he saw the small, weeping girl kneeling on the floor, her black-and-white uniform completely soaked in fresh blood, a massive, sickening bruise covering half of her face.
A dark, incredibly dangerous fury instantly ignited in the mafia boss's chest. Cole Mercer did not abide the torture of innocent, defenseless people in his territory.
