Chapter 7 - The Brass Key Revelation

Close-up: Cole went completely, absolutely still.

The terrifying, lethal tension radiating from his broad shoulders seemed to entirely evaporate, replaced by a sudden, paralyzing shock that completely overwhelmed his senses. His intense gaze abruptly dropped from Lily's bruised, tear-streaked face down to her blood-stained black-and-white uniform.

His dark eyes locked entirely, exclusively onto the object resting against her collarbone.

It was a tiny, intricately carved brass key.

The heavy crystal chandeliers above cast a warm, flickering candlelight over the unique, unmistakable wards and ancient engravings etched into the metal of the key. It was a design that only a handful of living men had ever seen, and a design that Cole Mercer had spent a decade searching the entire globe to find.

All the color violently drained from the fearsome mafia boss's face. The terrifying, untouchable king of the criminal underworld suddenly looked as though he had seen a ghost rise from the polished marble floor.

"Where did you get that?" Cole whispered. His deep voice was completely breathless, trembling with a profound, earth-shattering emotion that made the heavily armed enforcers in the room exchange bewildered, deeply panicked glances.

Medium close-up: Lily looked up at the towering, intimidating man in complete, utter confusion. She touched the small brass key with her trembling, blood-stained fingers, instinctively wanting to protect the only piece of her history she had left in the world.

A subtle, incredibly powerful emotional pause hung heavily in the air as the invisible, battered maid looked into the eyes of the deadliest man in the city.
