Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN THEY TURNED INTO STAFF
Emily had not called me once during the last six weeks of my trip.
At first, I blamed the time difference.
Then pregnancy fatigue.
Then her phone stopped connecting entirely.
Whenever I called the mansion, Margaret answered.
Emily is sleeping.
Emily is emotional.
Emily is under medical supervision.
Emily asked not to be disturbed.
The sentences were too polished.
Too similar.
I asked our head of security to check on her.
He resigned the next morning.
No explanation.
That was when the photographs began arriving.
The first came from an anonymous account.
A blurred image of Emily polishing silver in the service kitchen.
The sender wrote only:
ASK WHY SHE IS WEARING THAT.
I asked Margaret.
She laughed.
“Emily insisted on helping with the gala.”
The second photograph showed the uniform more clearly.
Not a costume.
Not a favor.
A staff badge clipped to her chest.
EMILY WARD.
Not Carter.
Ward was her maiden name.
Someone had removed her from the family identity while keeping her inside the house.
The third photograph showed a red mark on her face.
The fourth showed her asleep in a chair beside an untouched plate.
The fifth showed Ashley checking Emily’s phone while Michael stood in the doorway.
I stopped asking questions openly.
I hired an outside investigator named Lena Ortiz.
No Carter employees.
No family attorneys.
No one connected to the board.
Lena traced the anonymous photographs to a former kitchen assistant named Rosa Martinez.
Rosa had worked at the mansion for eleven years.
She quit after seeing Margaret strike Emily with a serving spoon.
Rosa had also saved copies of security footage before Michael ordered the servers wiped.
The footage showed how the change began.
Three days after I left for Singapore, Margaret told Emily the upstairs bedroom was being renovated because of mold.
She moved Emily into a small room near the service stairs.
Then she claimed the pregnancy made Emily unstable.
She removed her access to the family driver.
Ashley took her phone “for rest.”
Michael froze her personal bank account under an emergency family-protection authorization.
Within two weeks, Emily depended on the household for food, transportation, communication, and medication.
Then Margaret introduced the gray uniform.
“You live off this house,” she said on camera. “You can contribute to it.”
Emily refused.
Margaret threatened to have her declared mentally incompetent.
Then threatened to remove the baby at birth.
Emily put on the uniform.
That decision would later be used against her.
The adoption petition described her “voluntary domestic role” as evidence she lacked the capacity to manage her own life.
