Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN AFTER THE UNIFORM

Emily did not return to the mansion.

Neither did I.

We moved into a smaller house near the hospital after our daughter left the NICU.

Her name was Grace.

Emily chose it.

Not because anyone deserved grace.

Because the child did.

Healing came slowly.

Emily panicked when red wine spilled.

Could not wear gray.

Refused household staff for two years.

She kept her own phone, keys, money, and medical records within reach.

I never touched them without asking.

Our marriage survived.

Not because the villains went to prison.

Because I stopped treating protection as control.

We attended therapy.

I learned to ask:

Do you want action?

Do you want company?

Do you want me to listen?

Emily learned she did not have to make decisions while still recovering.

Grace grew healthy.

She knew the story in pieces appropriate to her age.

At seven, she asked why Grandma Margaret was not around.

Emily said:

“She made unsafe choices.”

At twelve, Grace asked about the uniform.

May you like

Emily answered:

“They tried to make me look powerless. I was not.”
