Chapter 3 - THE MISSING OFFICER

Marcus insisted he found the badge.

Warren said someone planted it.

The neighbors said nothing until federal agents began taking names.

Then memories surfaced.

Marcus leaving at unusual hours.

Black trucks behind Warren’s property.

Men training in the yard after midnight.

A storage shed no child was allowed near.

Sarah listened carefully.

Fear broke differently in each person.

Some spoke too much.

Some apologized first.

Some waited to hear what others admitted.

Hayes secured the yard.

Lily sat inside with a female agent and her rabbit.

Sarah remained outside.

Marcus watched her.

“You think you’re special because a soldier saluted you?”

“No.”

“You kicked me in front of my family.”

“You grabbed me in front of my daughter.”

He smiled faintly.

“Different rules for you?”

“No. Better evidence.”

The backyard cameras recorded everything.

Three neighbors had additional video.

Marcus’s threat.

The shove.

Sarah’s controlled response.

No pursuit.

No revenge.

No second strike.

His assault case would survive.

The badge was larger.

Jonah Reed had been transporting encrypted intelligence connected to a domestic weapons-smuggling network. Someone knew the route.

Someone altered the convoy’s emergency channel.

Someone moved stolen military access credentials through suburban storage sites.

Warren Caldwell’s construction company owned warehouses near both attack locations.

Marcus worked as “security consultant” for the company.

No formal qualifications.

No clear job description.

Large payments.

Sarah looked at Warren.

“How long have you known Jonah?”

“I don’t.”

“You recognized the name.”

“No.”

“You looked at your son before you answered.”

Warren’s face hardened.

“You don’t interrogate me in my own yard.”

Sarah looked toward the federal agents carrying evidence bags.

“It stopped being your yard when the badge appeared.”

Search warrants followed.

Inside Warren’s basement office, agents found procurement invoices for tactical equipment supposedly delivered to police departments that never received it.

Inside Marcus’s room, they found videos.

Not just training.

Surveillance.

Sarah entering her house.

Lily walking to school.

Jonah Reed’s vehicle near Fort Lincoln.

One video showed Daniel Caldwell months before his death.

Sarah stopped breathing.

Daniel stood outside a warehouse speaking with Warren.

The date was three days before the accident that killed him.

Sarah had been told Daniel died after losing control on a mountain road.

No witnesses.

No suspicious evidence.

Now he appeared connected to a smuggling network run through the family across the street.

The recall order had brought Sarah back into service.

The video pulled her back into a marriage she thought had ended with grief.
