Chapter 5 - THE MISSING NIGHT
Memory returned in fragments.
Rain on the windshield.
Her father’s office light burning after midnight.
A red scarf around her neck.
Daniel standing in the hallway.
Claire had been twenty-six, not in New York as she believed. She had driven home after an argument with Robert about joining the family company.
Her father called.
He sounded afraid.
Claire reached the office and saw Daniel beside Robert’s desk.
Then nothing.
The next memory was waking in her Manhattan apartment two days later with a severe headache.
Evelyn told her she had fainted from exhaustion.
Daniel had constructed the story.
Claire listened to the recording again.
After Vanessa’s voice, another door opened.
Her younger voice said, “Dad?”
Then Daniel cursed.
A sharp impact.
Silence.
Michael said, “What did you do to her?”
Daniel answered, “She won’t remember.”
Claire’s knees weakened.
He had drugged her too.
The recording ended before revealing how she left.
Morales reopened Robert Bennett’s death as homicide.
The district attorney requested emergency warrants for everyone connected to the network.
Daniel was arrested before midnight.
He denied everything.
His lawyer claimed the recording was manipulated and the hidden room had been staged.
Vanessa requested a deal.
She offered the location of the original declaration in exchange for immunity on financial charges.
The prosecutor refused full immunity but offered consideration.
Vanessa revealed the document was in a safety-deposit box under a false name.
Inside the box, investigators found more than the declaration.
There was a flash drive containing videos from Daniel’s operation.
Women signing documents while sedated.
Nurses administering unprescribed medication.
Probate officials accepting envelopes.
A video from Robert’s office showed part of the final confrontation.
But the camera angle did not capture Daniel injecting Robert.
It captured Claire entering.
Daniel turned toward her.
Vanessa approached from behind and pressed a cloth over Claire’s face.
Claire collapsed.
Vanessa had lied about being absent.
She was there.
She helped erase Claire’s memory.
When confronted, Vanessa changed her story again.
She claimed Daniel controlled her too.
He paid her debts, threatened her children, and used recordings of her committing fraud.
Claire did not know whether to believe any of it.
Victims could become accomplices.
Accomplices could also be victims.
The law liked categories.
Reality did not.
Evelyn’s guardianship was permanently revoked. She moved into a secure rehabilitation residence while recovering from the drugs.
Claire visited every day.
One afternoon, Evelyn said, “There’s something I didn’t tell the police.”
Claire waited.
“The will wasn’t only about money.”
“What else?”
“I left the house to you.”
“I don’t want it.”
“There’s a reason.”
Evelyn described a locked cabinet beneath the old greenhouse. Robert built it before his death. Daniel never discovered it because Evelyn convinced him the greenhouse foundation was unstable.
Inside, Robert stored original trust ledgers.
Claire and Morales opened the cabinet.
They found ledgers proving Daniel’s theft.
They also found letters.
One was addressed to Claire.
Written by Robert the week before he died.
