Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE

Daniel returned to the Bennett estate.
It was the one place no one expected him to choose.
Police believed he would flee the country.
Claire knew better.
Daniel did not want freedom.
He wanted the story restored.
The house was where he had been husband, guardian, trustee, and master. Without it, he was only a criminal running out of time.
Claire and Evelyn were placed in a safe house.
At midnight, Claire received a video.
Daniel stood in the upstairs bathroom.
The broken door had been repaired.
Behind him, the mirror was gone.
“I know you’re watching,” he said. “Bring your mother home.”
Claire showed Morales.
The detective wanted to surround the property and wait.
Claire noticed something in the video.
A medical photograph taped to the wall.
It showed June Whitaker’s mother.
Daniel had June.
Morales confirmed June was missing.
Daniel sent a second video.
June sat inside the study with a cord around her wrists.
Sykes stood nearby.
Daniel demanded the original Bennett ledgers and a live broadcast in which Evelyn confessed to killing Robert.
He wanted to transform himself from murderer into witness.
Evelyn said, “I’ll do it.”
Claire answered, “No.”
“This started because I protected a lie.”
“And it continues if you give him another one.”
Morales developed a rescue plan.
Evelyn would appear to cooperate while police entered through the greenhouse tunnel.
Claire insisted on accompanying her.
At dawn, mother and daughter walked through the front door.
Daniel waited in the hallway.
He wore the same dark suit from the day Claire found the bruises.
“You came,” he said.
Evelyn looked smaller than ever.
But her voice was steady.
“Yes.”
Sykes searched them.
Claire carried the ledgers in a leather case.
Copies.
The originals were already with prosecutors.
Daniel led them upstairs.
June was locked in the bathroom.
Vanessa’s old camera system streamed to an encrypted site.
Daniel positioned Evelyn before it.
“Tell them you poisoned Robert.”
Evelyn looked at the lens.
“My name is Evelyn Bennett.”
Daniel nodded.
“Continue.”
“I helped Daniel enter my family.”
His expression changed.
“I helped him hide financial crimes. I signed the transfer that gave him control of my husband’s company.”
“That isn’t the statement.”
“I remained silent after Robert died.”
Daniel stepped toward her.
Claire moved between them.
He smiled.
“You still think evidence saves people.”
“It saved fourteen women.”
“It didn’t save your father.”
“No. Because my mother protected you.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Claire continued.
“And I won’t.”
Daniel grabbed her.
This time Claire expected it.
She twisted away and struck the emergency button hidden beneath her sleeve.
Nothing happened.
Sykes laughed.
“We found the transmitter.”
Daniel forced Claire against the bathroom wall.
The same place as before.
He raised his hand.
Evelyn said, “Daniel.”
He turned.
She held his own gun.
June had slipped it from the bathroom cabinet and passed it to her.
Evelyn’s hands shook.
Daniel smiled.
“You won’t shoot.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “But she will.”
Morales stepped from the hallway with her weapon raised.
The greenhouse team had entered minutes earlier through a different route.
Sykes ran.
An officer tackled him on the stairs.
Daniel moved toward Evelyn.
Claire shouted.
Morales fired once into the floor beside his foot.
He froze.
Authorities flooded the hallway.
The moment Claire had imagined for months finally arrived.
Yet there was no triumph.
Only Evelyn lowering the gun and collapsing into her daughter’s arms.
As Daniel was cuffed, he looked at Claire.
“You’ll spend the rest of your life wondering which parts were real.”
Claire answered, “No. Only you need confusion to survive.”
Then officers led him away.
But one question remained.
Who had uploaded Daniel’s live stream?
May you like
The encrypted site belonged to a judicial server.
The account was registered to the probate judge who granted Daniel guardianship over Evelyn.
