Chapter 8 - THE MILL

The tunnel smelled of rust and river water.
Claire moved through darkness using her phone light. The old paper mill had been closed for sixteen years, but generators hummed somewhere above.
At the end of the tunnel, a steel door stood open.
Vanessa waited inside.
She held a gun.
“Phone on the floor.”
Claire obeyed.
“Where’s my mother?”
“Alive.”
“You said Daniel controlled you.”
“He did.”
“And now?”
“Now I control what’s left.”
Vanessa explained that Daniel’s arrest threatened everyone in the network. Lawyers, doctors, judges, financial managers. They would pay millions to keep the ledgers buried.
Vanessa wanted the evidence and Evelyn’s signature on a statement blaming Robert’s death on Michael.
Claire said, “No one will believe it.”
“They don’t need to believe it. They only need reasonable doubt.”
Sykes brought Evelyn into the room.
Her wrists were tied. One cheek was bruised, but she was conscious.
“Claire,” she whispered.
Vanessa placed documents on a table.
“Sign.”
Evelyn shook her head.
Sykes tightened the rope around her wrists.
Claire stepped forward.
“Stop.”
Vanessa aimed the gun at her.
“Daniel said you always believed you were the smartest person in the room.”
“Daniel is in jail.”
“He still understands you.”
Claire looked at the security camera above the door.
“Does he understand that camera?”
Vanessa glanced upward.
A tiny mistake.
Claire lunged.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Sykes grabbed Claire and slammed her against the table. Evelyn kicked his knee. He fell.
Vanessa recovered the gun and aimed at Evelyn.
Then the mill lights shut off.
Morales’s voice echoed from the corridor.
“Drop the weapon!”
Vanessa fired toward the sound.
Police returned no shots because Evelyn and Claire were in the line of fire.
Claire pulled her mother behind a steel press.
Sykes escaped through a side door.
Vanessa ran after him.
Officers pursued.
In the darkness, Evelyn clutched Claire’s sleeve.
“I’m sorry.”
“Not now.”
“I need you to know.”
“Mom, stay quiet.”
“I signed the original transfer.”
Claire froze.
“What?”
“Robert didn’t transfer the company to Daniel.”
The declaration, the video, the forced signature—all of it centered on Robert.
But Evelyn said Robert’s signature was rejected because the transfer required spousal approval.
Daniel brought the document to Evelyn while Claire was unconscious.
She signed.
She gave Daniel control.
Not under sedation.
Not at gunpoint.
She did it because Daniel promised to keep Robert’s crimes hidden and protect Claire from prosecution as an accessory.
Daniel’s fortune began with Evelyn’s choice.
The abuse came later.
Claire wanted to reject the confession, but she heard truth in it.
Police captured Vanessa near the river.
Sykes escaped.
Inside Vanessa’s coat, investigators found a list of payments.
One recipient was Officer Nolan—the first patrol officer at the Bennett house.
He had delayed the response and warned Vanessa about the safe.
The network had reached law enforcement.
Morales ordered a confidential task force.
Then she received a message from Daniel’s jail unit.

Aaron Sykes had entered the facility using forged federal credentials.
Daniel Bennett was gone.
