Dante stared at the documents, his brilliant mind snapping the puzzle pieces together in a fraction of a second.
This wasn't just about a wicked stepmother disliking a child. This was a calculated, financial assassination.
When Dante's late wife had passed away, she had left Lily a massive, untouchable maternal trust fund worth nearly fifty million dollars. Dante had never touched a dime of it. But according to the adoption decree in his hand, the moment Victoria became Lily’s legal mother, she would gain full administrative rights to the child's estate.
"You were going to ship my seven-year-old daughter to an abusive facility in another country," Dante stated, the sheer, horrifying reality of it echoing through the silent ballroom. "Just so you could drain her dead mother’s trust fund."
The wealthy guests murmured in absolute disgust. Several people pulled out their phones, completely horrified by the woman in the red dress.
Victoria realized she was completely cornered. The elegant, sophisticated facade melted away, revealing the greedy, desperate monster underneath.
"So what if I was?!" Victoria suddenly shrieked, tears of rage ruining her makeup. "You never look at me, Dante! You're obsessed with that brat! She follows you around like a ghost! I wanted a real life with you! I wanted the lifestyle you promised me! She was in the way!"
She pointed a vicious finger at Lily, who was hiding behind Dante's legs.
"She’s weak! She’s pathetic! And you’re a fool for letting a child dictate your empire!" Victoria spat.
