Chapter 5 - THE FATHER AT THE GLASS DOOR
Michael’s image at the locked police-station door became central to the case.
His attorney argued he was a terrified father.
Anyone would pound on glass when strangers kept children away.
Reed agreed that fear alone proved nothing.
Then station audio revealed what Michael shouted after seeing the pharmacy record.
“Emma, you don’t know what you took.”
Not:
Are you hurt?
Is Olivia breathing?
What happened?
He spoke about evidence.
Then:
“Open the door before she tells you something she misunderstood.”
He knew Emma had information.
The locked door did more than separate a father from his daughters.
It preserved the first uncoached disclosure.
Reed’s decision to move the girls behind the counter prevented Michael from regaining control of the story.
He later said:
“I didn’t know whether he was guilty. I knew the child asked for safety, and he arrived trying to overpower the room.”
That distinction shaped new police training.
