Chapter 9 - The Debt of a Lifetime

"You have nothing to apologize for," Adrian said, his voice thick with raw, unrestrained gratitude. "You lived in fear for three years in a tiny servant's room. You endured Beatrice's abuse. You risked your own life every single day just to keep my daughter breathing."

He reached out and gently placed his large hand over Claire's trembling fingers.

"You didn't just save Nora," Adrian whispered, looking deeply into Claire's eyes. "You saved me. You gave me a reason to live again."

Claire let out a choked, beautiful sob, burying her face in her hands as years of terrifying anxiety finally washed away. She was safe. They were safe.

Nora, still utterly unfazed by the dramatic events, gently patted Claire's hair. "Don't cry, Mama," the little girl said sweetly.

Adrian’s heart swelled. He looked at the three-year-old girl in the vintage yellow dress. She had his wife's smile, but she had Claire's brave, gentle spirit.

"She thinks you're her mother," Adrian noted softly.

Claire quickly wiped her tears, panicking slightly. "I'll tell her the truth, sir. I'll step away. You are her father, she belongs with you."

"No," Adrian said immediately, his tone firm and absolute. "You raised her. You loved her when I couldn't. A biological tie doesn't negate three years of motherhood."

He stood up, offering his hand to Claire.

"You aren't a maid anymore, Claire," Adrian declared smoothly. "You are never putting on that uniform again. From this moment on, you are an equal partner in this estate. You are Nora's mother, and you are family."

Claire took his hand, her legs trembling as he gently pulled her up from the floor. She looked around the luxurious bedroom, realizing her entire life of poverty and fear was permanently over.

Adrian turned to little Nora. He knelt down, extending his arms.
