Chapter 1 - The Silent Warning

The grand, luxury American mansion was a breathtaking masterpiece of wealth and status. Sparkling crystal chandeliers bathed the polished marble floors in warm light as hundreds of elite guests celebrated the most anticipated engagement party of the year.
At the center of it all was Ethan, a handsome, thirty-something billionaire wearing an immaculate black tuxedo and a crisp bowtie. He should have been the happiest man in the room. Instead, he felt a crushing, agonizing wave of dizziness wash over him—a symptom of the mysterious, sudden illness that had been slowly destroying his body for the last three months.
Seeking a moment of quiet, Ethan stepped into an empty hallway just off the main ballroom.
Waiting for him there was Lily.
Lily was a seven-year-old girl with brown hair, wearing a simple white lace dress, clutching a worn stuffed bunny against her chest. She was the daughter of the estate’s housekeeper, and she had been born entirely deaf and mute.
Ethan had always been kind to her, learning basic sign language so she wouldn't feel invisible in his massive house.
He crouched down, forcing a tired smile. "Hey, sweetie. Are you enjoying the party?"
Lily didn't smile back. Her big eyes were wide with pure, unfiltered terror.
She immediately dropped her stuffed bunny. Her tiny hands flew up, frantically signing to him. Ethan watched her fingers, his blood slowly turning to ice as he translated the desperate, silent warning.
“The pretty lady puts medicine in your food.”
Ethan stared at her. His handsome face went completely, violently pale. The dizziness instantly vanished, replaced by an apocalyptic surge of adrenaline.
