Chapter 1 - The Code Blue Emergency

The private intensive care unit room of the elite downtown hospital was a sterile, brightly lit sanctuary of life-support equipment, flashing medical monitors, and humming IV drips. But the heavy, tense quiet of the room was suddenly and violently shattered.

Amid the stillness, the bedside medical monitor abruptly blared a piercing, high-pitched emergency alarm. Adrian Vale’s heart rate spiked erratically into the red zone, and his blood pressure plummeted dangerously on the digital display.

The experienced nurse standing by the chart instantly slammed her hand down onto the red code blue button on the wall, flooding the hallway with flashing red strobe lights.

"Code blue! We're losing him!" the Nurse screamed in a panicked, loud voice, lunging forward to grab the emergency crash cart as the heavy doors flew open.

Lying unconscious on the hospital bed was Adrian Vale—a thirty-nine-year-old man who was the undisputed, terrifying mafia boss of the city. He was shirtless, revealing a massive, heavily tattooed chest and arms, with medical IV lines and surgical tubes taped securely to his skin.

Standing frozen near the corner of the room was a young mother in her twenties, her brown hair tied back in a messy updo, wearing a pale gray housekeeper uniform. Wrapped tightly in her arms was her three-year-old daughter, Lily, a toddler with curly brown hair wearing a light cream dress and clutching a worn, ratty stuffed rabbit.

The mother pulled her little daughter close against her chest, her expression shifting from anxious disbelief to sheer, unadulterated terror as she watched the monitors flatline.
