Chapter 5 - The Impossible Scent

Close-up: The lead surgeon stopped chest compressions for a vital second, her eyes darting from the flatlining monitor over to the small child standing by the bed.

She turned her head completely toward the mother, a profound realization setting in about the terrifying accuracy of the child's warning.

"She... she smelled the infection?" the Doctor asked, her voice dropping into a breathless, disbelieving whisper, staring wide-eyed at the little girl. "Before our most advanced hospital equipment detected anything in the bloodwork?"

"She has an extraordinary sense of smell," the Mother answered, her voice shaking violently as she clutched Lily tighter against her neck. "When she was a baby, she could smell gas leaks before the detectors went off. She said his bandage smelled like metal and rotting leaves."

The doctor’s face went completely pale. The synthetic biological agent used on the blade was odorless to normal human noses—crafted specifically to evade medical detection until it was far too late. But a toddler with hyper-sensitive olfactory senses had picked up the chemical compound hours before it triggered septic shock.
