Chapter 4 - The Cruel Advice

Vanessa sighed loudly, shaking her head like she was dealing with a toddler. “Marriage can be difficult, Allison. That doesn't mean every woman in the city is sleeping with your husband.”
Allison looked at the woman in the red dress. And she smiled. It was the saddest, most broken smile I had ever seen.
“You're right,” Allison whispered.
Vanessa appeared visibly relieved, reaching for her wine glass.
Then, Allison continued. “That’s exactly why I asked you directly last Tuesday.”
The relief completely vanished from Vanessa’s face. She froze, the wine glass hovering halfway to her lips.
Luca slowly turned his entire body toward his fiancée. “She asked you what?”
Vanessa said absolutely nothing.
Allison looked at Luca, her eyes burning with fresh tears. “I called Vanessa on my wedding anniversary. I asked her whether she had seen Adrian at the restaurants that day.”
Her voice trembled, but she refused to look away from the mafia boss.
“She told me she hadn't,” Allison said.
Adrian lowered his head, staring at his lap.
“Then,” Allison continued, her voice gaining a desperate strength, “Vanessa told me I was embarrassing myself. She told me I was getting older, becoming insecure, and that I was just jealous of younger, prettier women.”
Vanessa’s cheeks turned a blotchy, furious red. “That is not how the conversation went, Luca! She’s twisting my words!”
Allison stared directly into Vanessa’s panicked eyes. “You told me I should be grateful Adrian still came home to me at all.”
Nobody moved. Nobody breathed. The vicious, cruel words settled over the elegant dining table like a thick, suffocating fog.
